모든 물질은 그 자체로써 의미를 가진다. 그러한 의미는 그것의 기능에 의해 혹은 그 물질과 엮어진 개인적인 경험에 의해 형성되며 때때로 그 기능과 무관하게 의미로써만 존재하기도 한다. 나는 이러한 물질의 주관적 혹은 객관적 의미를 발견하고 그것을 시각화 또는 형태화시키는 작업을 진행한다.

나의 작업에서 바셀린은 보호와 치유의 의미를 가진 상징적 물질이며 동시에 실질적으로 작품을 구성하는 조각적 매체로써 이용된다. 본래 바셀린은 석유에서 정제된 추출물이며, 상처의 지혈과 치료 혹은 건조한 피부의 보습 제로써 사용되어왔다. 이러한 바셀린의 치유 적 기능의 열쇠는 바로 ‘보습’인데, 실제로 (의학적으로) 피부에 상처를 입었을 때 상처부위를 보습해주면 피부 속 세포가 더욱 활발하게 재생함으로써 결과적으로 치료시간을 앞당길 수 있다는 연구결과가 있다.

바셀린의 이러한 의학적 기능은 나로 하여금 바셀린을 상처의 보호와 치유를 촉진시키는 상징적 도구(Tool)로써 존재하게 하였고, 이러한 의미는 나의 작업에서 각각 Vaseline armor series 와 Treatment series 그리고 Vaseline cake로 시각화 혹은 형태화 되었다. ■ 백정기

Every material has a meaning in itself. The meaning is formed by its function or individual stories related with it and sometimes exists by only itself. I discover this sort of subjective or objective meaning from every substance that I am interested in and make a formation of it visually as an art work. In my work, Vaseline is a symbolic matter meaning a protection and healing and, at the same time, has been used as a sculptural material constituting my works. Originally, Vaseline is a jelly-type substance extracted from purified oil and has been used as a hemostatic agent, remedy and moisturizer for dried skin. The key of curative function in Vaseline is 'Moisturizing'. Actually (medically), cells under the skin proliferate actively when the injured area of skin is moist so that the healing duration can be saved eventually. The medical function makes me regard Vaseline as an emblematic tool to hasten wound protection, healing and moisturizing. Each of these meanings was visualized or manifested by the creation of Vaseline armor series, Treatment series and Vaseline cake in my work. ■ BEAKJUNGKI
